Focusing Research Topics

Kravetz, R.

It is common for students to conceive research projects that are too broad in scope for the time and resources available to them. I propose to share a method of narrowing research topics. First, the class looks at a “model” research statement that includes a focused topic, an analytical question, and the question’s potential significance. We then work backward, showing how the student made a series of different types of choices to arrive at the feasible topic. The workshop also includes practice on framing research questions and conceptualizing their significance—whether it is practical, conceptual, or both—for a targeted set of readers.
